"I happy to be a small part of the coolest thing in the world!"

Background: Angelys Balek is the Founder and Creative Director of her namesake women’s collection. She studied Fine Arts at Bangkok University where she aspired to create a line that embodies what she describes as, “a sophisticated, sweet feminine style.” Upon graduation from university in Bangkok, Balek continued her fashion schooling at the London College of Fashion. In 2009, she came to New York City to actualize her dream in fashion design. In that same year, with the help of her sister Ashley and childhood friend, Jenista – Balek’s dream came true. In the spring of 2010, her flagship store was opened in the heart of Siam Square, Bangkok. In June 2012, Balek expanded her store to the 2nd floor of ZEN at Central World in Bangkok.

Vision: My vision as a designer is to set the highest standard for quality and design while presenting an accessible price point.  My principles focus on redefining the past and present generation’s style for the modern woman.  My ideals and inspirations vary from the 1950’s swoop line and 1960s mini-skirt style to the 21st-century modern feminine look.  Each garment incorporates the use of exotic Thai and European fabrics matched with exquisite designs and constructive, modern techniques. In this way I hope to share my vision with others.

Signature style: A perfect blend of sophistication and sweetness with a feminine undertone.

Influence: One of the biggest influences of my unique style is my childhood experience of growing up in Thailand and of travelling the world. Thailand’s culture is unique and vibrant  In everyday life, there is a strong emphasis on the concept of “sanuk”, the idea that life should be fun.  I apply the idea of “sanuk” mixed with the inspirations of my journeys into the designs.

Brand philosophy: The mission of Angelys Balek is to empower women and to allow them to express themselves in a positive way while feeling good about the standards the brand represents.

Making it happen: One of the greatest challenges as an independent designer is the mental strength I need to overcome my expectations. In a competitive industry where our designs are critiqued and judged by our peers, I believe this becomes a building of my successes and failures. Because the industry is strong and competitive, the creative style needed to stand out from my peers in each collection is what I strive for and what makes the difference between the good and the exceptional designers.

Celebrity crush: Current celebrities and fashion icons I would like to dress include the classic beauty of Natalie Portman, Factionists like The Clarins Sisters, the laid back Kate Bosworth, the quirky/eccentric Zooey Deschanel, and the talented vocalist Fiona Apple who is constantly creating a new sound.

What does New York City mean to you? New York City is like a second home to me. The city allows a designer like myself to exude creativity and passion in the arts. It epitomizes different pockets of cultures and is a melting pot for fashion. The city inspires me to create a unique sense of style catered to the different ideas in my collection. Some of my inspirations include the array of window displays on Fifth Avenue, especially on occasions like Fashion Night Out.
